XAT 2011 was much more challenging than the previous years’ papers. XAT introduced the pattern of differential marking this year. There were questions with marks ranging from 1 to 5. There were 101 questions in the paper worth 253 marks. Each question had 5 options. The penalty for incorrect answers was 25% of the marks allotted to the question. Of all the sections “Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning” was relatively easier. There were some doable questions in this section. Both “Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation” and “Analytical Reasoning and Decision Making” sections were tough and time consuming. There were no easy questions and a test-taker needed to look for questions in which he/she was comfortable.
Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation (43 questions, 117 marks): The section was very difficult and there were hardly any easy questions.
Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning (34 questions, 69 marks): The section was easier as compared to the rest of the paper though there were many questions that were subjective in nature. The number of CR questions decreased as compared to last year. Questions on sentence completion, para-jumbles and one RC passage were doable. It was possible to attempt questions worth 20-22 marks.
Analytical Reasoning and Decision Making (24 questions, 67 marks): AR questions were very difficult except one set of three questions. Decision Making was also very time-consuming.
